How to build confidence in your dog

Small, repeatable successes can help a dog approach unfamiliar situations with more composure.

Confidence grows through achievable experiences, not forced exposure. Give your dog a task they understand in a setting where they can succeed, then gradually add challenge.

Pay attention to recovery. A dog who can pause, reconnect with you, and continue learning is giving you useful feedback. If they shut down or escalate, make the next repetition easier.

Clear communication from the handler matters as much as the exercise itself. Consistent cues and manageable steps help you both know what success looks like.
