Choosing the right training program

Start with the dog in front of you and the goals that matter in your daily life.

The right program isn’t determined by your dog’s age—or simply by what commands they know. It’s determined by what your dog actually needs.

With young puppies, our first priority is development. During those early weeks, we focus heavily on confidence, leadership and helping your puppy learn how to settle when life is quiet. We also introduce proper socialization—not simply meeting every person or dog they see, but learning to experience people, dogs, sounds and new environments positively while remaining connected to you.

As a puppy develops, training can expand into obedience, drive and motivation based on your goals. For some dogs, that may eventually include more advanced work such as tug development, scent work, bite development or other specialized training based on your goals.

For older dogs, the distinction between obedience and behavior becomes especially important. Obedience teaches skills such as heel, recall, sit, down and stay, and develops greater reliability with those skills. But if your dog already understands the basics and the real challenge is reactivity, fear, insecurity, aggression or another behavioral issue, simply practicing those commands again may not address what is actually causing the problem.

That’s where behavior modification—or a combination of obedience and behavior work—may be more appropriate.

You don’t need to figure that out on your own. An in-person evaluation gives us the opportunity to observe your dog firsthand, learn what you’re experiencing at home and understand what you want life with your dog to look like. From there, we can recommend a training path that makes sense for the dog in front of us.
