Why dogs bark and lunge on leash

A practical look at excitement, uncertainty, and what to observe before choosing a training plan.

Barking and lunging can look the same from a distance while coming from very different motivations. Some dogs are worried about space. Others are frustrated that a leash prevents them from approaching. High energy can amplify either response.

Watch what happens before the reaction: the distance from the trigger, the dog’s posture, whether food still matters, and how quickly the dog settles afterward. Those details help identify a useful starting point.

Avoid testing your dog by moving closer until they explode. Work at a distance where they can notice the trigger and still respond to you. If there is bite risk, get hands-on help and use sensible management while you build skills.
